The Number of Magnetic Null Points in the Quiet Sun Corona

چکیده
The coronal magnetic field above a particular photospheric region will vanish at a certain number of points, called null points. These points can be found directly in a potential field extrapolation or their density can be estimated from Fourier spectrum of the magnetogram. The spectral estimate, which assumes that the extrapolated field is random, homogeneous and has Gaussian statistics, is found here to be relatively accurate for quiet Sun magnetograms from SOHO's MDI. The majority of null points occur at low altitudes, and their distribution is dictated by high wavenumbers in the Fourier spectrum. This portion of the spectrum is affected by Poisson noise, and as many as five-sixths of null points identified from a direct extrapolation can be attributed to noise. The null distribution above 1500 km is found to depend on wavelengths that are reliably measured by MDI in either its low-resolution or high-resolution mode. After correcting the spectrum to remove white noise and compensate for the modulation transfer function we find that a potential field extrapolation contains, on average, one magnetic null point, with altitude greater than 1.5 Mm, above every 322 Mm 2 patch of quiet Sun. Analysis of 562 quiet Sun magnetograms spanning the two latest solar minima shows that the null point density is relatively constant with roughly 10% day-today variation. At heights above 1.5 Mm, the null point density decreases approximately as the inverse cube of height. The photospheric field in the quiet Sun is well approximated as that from discrete elements with mean flux |φ| = 1.0 × 10 19 Mx distributed randomly with density n = 0.007 Mm −2 .

Context. With the recent launch of the Hinode satellite our view of the nature and evolution of quiet-Sun regions has been improved. In light of the new high resolution observations, we revisit the study of the quiet Sun’s topological nature. Aims. Topology is a tool to explain the complexity of the magnetic field, the occurrence of reconnection processes, and the heating of the corona. This Le...

Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

Magnetic fields play a dominant role in the atmospheres of the Sun and other Sun-like stars. Outside sunspot regions, the photosphere of the so-called quiet Sun contains myriads of small-scale magnetic concentrations, with strengths ranging from the detection limit of ∼1016 Mx up to ∼ Mx. The tireless motion of these magnetic 20 3 # 10 flux concentrations, along with the continual appearance an...

Several coronal bright points identified in a quiet region of the Sun from SOHO/EIT Fe XII images are found to have a time evolution from birth to decay which is extremely well correlated with the rise and fall of magnetic flux as determined from photospheric magnetograms made with the SOHO/MDI instrument. Radiative losses of the bright points are found to be much less than conductive losses bu...

A model is proposed for the coronal response to the interaction between randomly moving photospheric magnetic ux elements. In this model the collision between two elements of opposing sign results in reconnection and the appearance of an X-ray bright point. A section of quiet sun on which elements are distributed and moving randomly, will contain a number of X-ray bright points. The model combi...
